Historian Page

The Southern Society of  Electroneurodiagnostics Technologists, Inc. ( formerly The Southern Society of EEG Techs)  was founded in 1960.
The Technologists from the southern United States  ( below the Mason Dixon Line) now had a society to call their OWN!

SSET pays tribute to the late Marion Menzel, R. EEG T., RCET, Ed D. who was elected the first SSET President.
Born and raised in Munford, Tenn., Menzel received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida International University. She then earned a doctorate in Education at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale.
Marion was very active in education and was truly one of the pioneers in our field. Her first job was as secretary to the president of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain. During World War II, she was a stereotypical Rosie the Riveter at a Boeing B-29 bomber plant in Memphis. After the war, Menzel held various medical-related positions at the University of Tennessee, hospitals and medical offices. She developed the first transistorized bedside EEG system for 11 Dade County hospitals. In the late 1960s, she headed the electroencephalography lab at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, FL. ( now known as Morton Plant Mease Health Care/Baycare)  In addition to her contributions to medicine, Menzel will be remembered for her work in the social services. She was a guardian ad litem for the court and in private practice, a child custody evaluator, a family mediator in Pinellas and Pasco counties in Florida, a family advocate and a counselor for the Belleair Montessori Academy and Women on the Way.

Her numerous affiliations include MENSA, Questors and the American, Southern and Western EEG Societies, and she held the No. 3 membership certificate at the Canadian EEG Society. She was one of the original "dirty dozen"  ( who later became the first eleven candidates ) to sit for the first ABRET exam. She is ABRET Board registered #1 in EEG. Marion has donated many personal items of historical significance to SSET. The  original gavel ( tack hammer)  used to call to order the First SSET Business meeting along with many original documents are part of the SSET Historian collection that is on display at the annual meeting.
Those who were priviledged to know Marion have truly richer lives.
